Renting a Room in Durham
Alcove lists private bedrooms in shared homes across Durham from vetted owners and property management firms. Every home has furnished common areas with utilities and wifi included, and every housemate is background checked, identity verified, and income verified. Leases run 3 to 18 months, and you only pay for and are only responsible for your own room.
How much does a room for rent in Durham cost?
Rooms in Durham on Alcove currently run from $415 to $1,600/mo in base rent, which includes utilities and wifi. Alcove's platform fee is added on top of that and depends on your lease length. Rooms with a private bathroom cost more than rooms with a shared bathroom. Each listing shows the full monthly total once you pick a room and a lease term.
What is included when I rent a room on Alcove?
A private bedroom in a shared home with furnished common areas, utilities and wifi included, and a professional cleaning before you move in. Bedrooms are usually unfurnished so you can bring your own furniture. Listings tagged Furnished Bedrooms include it.
Who will my housemates be?
Everyone in an Alcove home applies through Alcove, passes the same screening (identity verification, income and employment verification, and a criminal and eviction background check by TransUnion), and signs their own lease. Each listing will show who the existing roommates are, and some homes are all female or all male. Roommates aren't always home during tours, but once you apply and qualify for a home you get access to their profiles, bios, and contact info so you can chat before you sign.
How long can I lease a room for?
Leases are 3 to 18 months on every Alcove home, and 12 months is the most common. You pick your move-in date and lease length when you apply.
Can I tour a room before applying?
Yes. Book a tour from any listing. Create an account, answer a few quick questions, and verify your ID, and a vetted local tour vendor meets you at the home so you can see the room and the shared spaces and meet your future roommates before you commit. Live video call tours are available if you can't make it in person.
How do I apply, and will it affect my credit?
Apply online from the listing page. You pay one application fee, and after that you can apply to as many rooms as you want, with up to two applications active at a time. Screening uses a soft credit pull, so it does not affect your credit score. Most landlords make an approval decision within a day or two.
Are pets allowed?
Many homes are pet friendly. Set the Pet Friendly filter to see only those homes.
